The Smoker

I took this man’s photo on State Street earlier this afternoon. I noticed him out of the corner of my eye as I walked past, hunched in a pocket of sunlight and backed against a wall.

Just as I feel compelled to look now, I was drawn back to him then. The shadows, the smoke, his hair. The jacket against the dark green wall. Is that a hospital bracelet?

I didn’t say hello or ask him his name. Maybe I should have. We all have a story, don’t we?

Floral Fog

Last night Tricia and I met with a salesperson at Steve’s Flower Market to discuss floral arrangements for our March 2019 wedding. Of course, I had to get some shots first! The fog on the windows at blue hour really made the storefront look special.

All images taken with my Sony a6000 using the Sigma 30mm, and edited in Lightroom and VSCO. These are some of my favorite photos yet.

Weekend Wanderings

If felt good to be out-and-about last weekend after being under the weather for over a week. Most photos were taken with my Apple iPhone X; some were taken with my Sony a6000 using the 30mm Sigma. All photos were edited in Lightroom and VSCO.

Fall on Fullerton

En route to the Gold Coast, one of my favorite neighborhoods to walk through and make photos, I was struck by an idea as quickly as Chicago’s latest Fall downpour came and went.

Why not explore a new block?

Sure, I’d driven, run, walked and Uber’ed through this Fullerton and Clark area of Lincoln Park hundreds of times before. But never before like this, with a camera and a mindful eye. I’m glad I listened to my hunch.

All photos were taken with my Sony a6000 using a Sigma 30mm lens, and edited in Adobe Lightroom and VSCO mobile.

Portra 400

My friend Mike gifted me his parents’ Canon AE-1 back in August. Before that, I’d never truly shot with a film camera, save for some here-and-there with a “disposable” back in the day.

After a bit of research on film brands and types, and how to use the camera, I purchased five rolls of 35mm Kodak Portra 400. Below are some of my favorite images from the first two.

Summer.

It’s Been a While

I’m ready to post again after a short break. I took a step back to reassess my goals; focus on growing as a photographer.

I discovered Bill Owens, Saul Leiter, Joel Meyerowitz. I studied the works of SebastiĆ£o Salgado and Vivian Maier. I was gifted a used, Canon AE-1 Program (my first film camera!) and just today loaded it with its first roll of film (from me)! I’m excited to see how the photos will turn out.

No Crop

I decided to give “shooting from the hip” a try today. To ice the cake, I decided to forego any cropping (other than some straightening) in post. I took everything below with my Sony a6000 using the Sigma 30mm.

I hope you enjoy viewing them as much as I enjoyed taking them!
